Start with the image, not the metres

Large-format printing is usually discussed as a number: three metres, four metres, five metres. That is understandable, but it can hide the real decision. PPI, DPI and the actual viewing condition

PPI describes how the available pixels are distributed across the intended image size. DPI describes how a physical device places ink or other output dots. They are related in conversation, but they are not the same decision. For a project team, the useful question is simpler: how close will people come to the work, and what will the finished surface need to hold at that distance?

A closer viewing position asks more from detail, texture and tonal transitions. A larger architectural viewing distance allows a wider physical span. Neither condition is inherently better. THE HANDOVER

A print-ready handover starts with the supplier’s template

“Print-ready” does not mean that one universal file can be sent unchanged to every physical process. It means the artwork is being prepared against a real production brief. 1. Confirm the visible image area
